Gambling in the United States has been legal since 1931 and has seen its ups and downs throughout the years. Early Internet history in the 1990’s saw the advent of Internet gambling websites, which first appeared at this time. Internet gambling history is not very long, but it has experienced an explosion that few other industries have.
The Beginning of Internet Gambling
The first casino appeared in 1995. The first casino offered 18 games. Internet gambling history, in terms of revenue, has grown from just over a billion dollars in 1997 to just under 11 billion in 2006. The first online casinos had many of the games that land based casinos had, but one main difference between the first online casinos and the many on the web today are the security capabilities of current online casinos. In early Internet casinos, there were not many security measures in place and fraud was a major problem. The first online casinos did not have security measures to stop fraud, but with the immense need for safety measures with the millions of online gamblers, the online casinos now are safe and secure.

The Caribbean leads the way
In Internet gambling history, 1994 was a big year as the Caribbean country of Antigua Barbuda passed a law that allowed online casinos to operate. This law was called the Free Trade and Processing Zone Act. After the popularity of online casinos skyrocketed, many online casinos appeared and were based in Canada and the United Kingdom. Nowadays, almost every online casino is located offshore. Currently, there is a ban on Internet gambling in the United States, mostly having to do with financial transaction methods, with the passing of the Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006.
